WE Drive™ - Flexible Power Conversion for Marine Electrification

WE Drive™

WE Drive™ is the power-conversion technology at the heart of many WE Tech solutions. It connects electrical generation, propulsion, power distribution and shore connection by converting power to match the requirements of the vessel and its onboard equipment.

Using variable-frequency-drive technology, WE Drive™ allows generators and motors to operate according to the vessel’s actual needs instead of being restricted by a fixed electrical frequency. This makes it a flexible foundation for variable-speed generation, electric propulsion and integrated marine power systems.

From an individual generator or motor application to a wider AC or DC power architecture, WE Drive™ helps bring the different parts of the vessel’s electrical system together.

One Technology, Multiple Applications

Variable-Speed Power Generation

WE Drive™ converts and manages electricity produced by a generator operating at variable speed. The generator can therefore operate according to the machinery’s requirements while WE Drive™ supplies power that is compatible with the vessel’s electrical network.

In motor applications, WE Drive™ controls the electrical frequency and voltage supplied to the propulsion motor. This allows motor operation to be coordinated with the vessel’s propulsion requirements.

WE Drive™ manages power before it is distributed through an AC network, a DC bus or a combination of both. It helps direct electrical energy between generation, propulsion and other onboard consumers.

WE Drive™ conditions incoming shore power to match the vessel’s electrical system. This allows the system to accommodate differences in the voltage and frequency of national power grids.

How WE Drive™ Controls Electrical Power

A generator or electrical grid supplies power at a particular voltage and frequency. These electrical characteristics may not always match the requirements of the connected motor, onboard network or operating condition.

Variable-frequency-drive technology solves this by electronically converting the incoming electricity and producing a controlled electrical output. By managing frequency and voltage, WE Drive™ allows generator and motor operation to be separated from a single fixed electrical frequency.

This controlled conversion makes it possible to integrate variable-speed machinery with the vessel’s electrical network and manage power between different parts of the onboard energy system.

WE Drive™ is designed for generator and motor applications with:

  • A compact and robust modular construction
  • Air- or liquid-cooled configurations
  • A power range of 0.5 MW to 6 MW in low-voltage applications
  • Compatibility with AC distribution, DC-bus systems or combined architectures

Benefits for the Vessel

Greater Operating Flexibility

Generators and motors can operate according to the vessel’s requirements rather than being directly restricted by a fixed electrical frequency.

Flexible System Integration

The same power-conversion technology can support generation, propulsion, shore connection and distribution through different AC and DC system architectures.

Installation Options for Different Vessels

Compact modular construction and a choice between air and liquid cooling provide flexibility when integrating WE Drive™ into different vessel designs.

Power That Matches Its Purpose

Controlled frequency and voltage allow electrical power to be converted for the connected equipment or onboard network before it is distributed and used.
