WE Spin - Instant Power Reserve for Stable Vessel Operations

WE Spin

WE Spin is WE Tech’s dedicated spinning-reserve solution for vessels requiring fast backup power and greater power-system stability. It uses flywheel or battery energy storage to provide reserve capacity immediately when electrical demand suddenly increases or a primary power source is lost.

Conventionally, this reserve may require an additional generator to remain online even when its full power is not needed. WE Spin makes the reserve available through energy storage, helping reduce unnecessary generator running hours while maintaining rapid access to power when operating conditions change.

By responding quickly to load variations and interruptions, WE Spin supports a more stable vessel grid, reduces the risk of blackout and helps keep essential operations running.

Power Support When the Vessel Needs It

What Is Spinning Reserve?

Spinning reserve is power capacity kept available so the electrical system can respond when demand suddenly increases or an operating power source becomes unavailable.

WE Spin provides this reserve through energy storage instead of relying solely on an additional running generator.

When the vessel experiences a sudden load increase or loss of primary supply, WE Spin rapidly releases stored energy into the electrical system.

This immediate support helps maintain the vessel grid while the power-management system adjusts generation and loads to the new operating condition.

WE Spin is available with flywheel and battery energy-storage technologies. Flywheels provide short-duration, high-power support, while battery configurations provide extended reserve duration and broader hybrid functionality.

The appropriate technology, power and reserve duration are selected according to the vessel’s load profile, system architecture, operating profile and class requirements.

WE Spin can be configured for both newbuild and retrofit projects where rapid reserve power, generator optimisation and power-system resilience are priorities.

Two Technologies for Different Reserve Requirements

Flywheel-Based WE Spin

Flywheel-based WE Spin provides ultra-fast, short-duration power support for sudden load variations and demanding transient conditions. Its high-power response and suitability for frequent cycling make it a compact solution for applications requiring reserve power immediately. Available configurations deliver 300–1,200 kW with a reserve duration of 15 seconds and no lifetime restrictions..

Battery-Based WE Spin

Battery-based WE Spin provides extended reserve power and broader hybrid functionality for demanding vessel operations. In addition to spinning reserve, the energy-storage system can support load smoothing, peak demand and greater operational flexibility, with potential for additional ESS functions. Available LTO and LFP configurations deliver 1,000–1,500 kW with reserve durations of 15 or 20 minutes.

Benefits for the Vessel and Operator

Improved Power Availability

Fast reserve power supports the vessel grid during sudden load changes or a loss of primary power supply.

Reduced Generator Running Hours

Reserve capacity from energy storage reduces the need to keep an additional generator online, lowering generator operating hours and maintenance demand.

Lower Fuel Consumption

Reducing unnecessary parallel generator operation can lower the fuel required to maintain the vessel’s spinning reserve.

More Stable Power-System Operation

Rapid energy support helps manage load variations, maintain grid stability and reduce the risk of blackout.
